On August 2, in the Odeon of Herod Atticus, the Athens State Orchestra will perform Finikos, a rarely-heard, early work by Yanni Christou, who died in 1970 at the age of forty-four. Christou is today considered to be one of Greece’s most original composers, and is slowly winning international recognition.
THE BEACH at Kalamitsa on the island of Skyros with its gold-flecked sands cradles a clear green-turquoise sea. Far down the beach are a few homes inhabited by elderly couples who eke out a living from their fields and from the sea.
Long ago, but not so very far away, there lived a people fond of all the joys of life. They were elegant and refined, loved beauty and gay colours, and amused themselves with games and contests. They showed great ingenuity, were master builders, and used the sea to forge themselves trade links all over the Mediterranean.
